East Greenwich

The farming lifestyle is deeply embedded in East Greenwich Township, located in western Gloucester County. A small town of about 10,500 residents, the community was created in 1881 through an act of the New Jersey Legislature. They carved out pieces of Greenwich Township and Mantua Township to create this family-friendly locale. It encompasses a total area of just under 15 square miles.

A couple historically significant landmarks include the George Craft III House, aka Elizabeth Gray Vining House, and the Eglington Cemetery. The Craft House in Mickleton was a tenant house where Elizabeth Gray Vining, a Quaker and former tutor to Crown Prince Akihito of Japan, lived and wrote her book, “Windows For the Crowne Prince” in 1951-1952. Eglington Cemetery in Clarksboro is the oldest official cemetery in the United States, and many members of the towns founding families are buried there.

Over the last decade, East Greenwich has undergone an impressive transformation, and is now locally recognized as one of the fastest growing communities in Gloucester County. Folk from other places have taken notice!
