Mantua

Right at the heart of Gloucester County is Mantua Township, a cozy community of almost 15,000 residents within about 16 square miles. Like its neighbor, East Greenwich, Mantua’s origins stem from New Jersey Legislature, when a signed act took parts of Greenwich Township in 1853.

The origin of Mantua’s name is in question among various groups. Some say the township was named after Mantua, Italy, while others say it’s inspired by a sub-tribe of the Lenape Native Americans. However, the most accepted theory is that Mantua got its name from Mantua Creek as it’s on an elevated plain looking down upon Mantua Creek.

Mantua is located conveniently close to Philadelphia (about 16 miles) and other major centers in the area, which is why many consider the township as the ideal, family-friendly suburb in which to live.
