Mullica Hill

Mullica Hill is a historic gem within Harrison Township of Gloucester County in Delaware River region, with ties to both the past and present. The town occupies about 3.6 square miles and is home to about 4,000 residents and growing. Dating back to the 17th century, the town traces its roots from English and Irish Quakers. An historic landmark is the Friends Meeting house, erected in 1806 on land acquired from the first settler on the south side of Raccoon Creek, Jacob Spicer. Meanwhile, its name, Mullica Hill, has its origins from another of the area’s pioneers, a Finnish family named Mullica whose family home back in Finland was “Mullikkamaki” (“maki” means hill in Finnish).

Aside from its Quaker identity, Mullica Hill also bears vestiges of the Civil War. In fact, much of the town was developed in this period. You can still see some of the Civil War-era buildings standing proudly in Mullica Hill today, including the old town hall.

There’s so much history to go around that the entire town of Mullica Hill was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
