The Borough of Wenonah is another central Gloucester County small gem (just over one square mile with a population of about 2,300) with is roots steeped in the farmland from which it was carved. The founders were businessmen coming from Camden in search of their “New Mantua” suburban, planned town. The Mantua Land and Improvement Company was incorporated in February 1871, they plotted out the rectangular town with elegant West Jersey Railroad train station at its core and on April 3, 1871 the town was named Wenonah. The Mantua Land and Improvement Company looked to attract the affluent from Philadelphia given its close proximity (just 12 miles away).

The Wenonah, was purportedly ascribed to be after Hiawatha’s mother in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s renowned poem “The Song of Hiawatha.” Some say the Indian name means first-born daughter. Other reportedly say she was referred to as “Lilly of the Prairie,” which could align with how the founders viewed their suburban discovery. Wenonah features two sites on the National Register of Historic Places, Benjamin Clark House and Memorial Presbyterian Church.
