Pitman borough sits within central Gloucester County, and dates back to Gloucester County Methodist ministers seeking a site for an annual camp meeting. Land was purchased from the Jessup family, the New Jersey Camp Meeting Association was chartered, and the first Pitman Grove Camp Meeting was held in August 1871, named for Rev. Charles Pitman. With no accommodations or housing, attendees pitched tents. As the Association began selling lots in 1873, the first cottages began to be erected, and by 1890 Pittman Grove had over 400 permanent homes. Then after petitioning to become its own town, Governor Stokes signed the bill incorporating Pitman Borough on May 24, 1905. Nobody quite knows why “Grove” was dropped in naming the town.

As of July 1976, Pitman Grove and Pitman Grove Auditorium were recorded into the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, and in August 1977 added to the National Register of Historic Places. The town now maintains an historic district ordinance, and any exterior building changes require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the borough’s building inspector.

Over the decades Pitman has seen ebbs and flows in its population with its 2.3 square miles, but it currently has about 9,000 residents. While as of 2014 the town is no longer “dry,” liquor stores and bars are prohibited. Though there are plenty of B.Y.O.B restaurants, and two local craft breweries operate under terms outlined by the state for sales of beer by the glass in their tasting rooms.
